This webinar, “Maximizing the Role of APPs in Oncology Care,” brought together oncology advanced practice providers to discuss how APPs can work at the top of their licensure across hospital-based, academic, and community settings.<br /><br />Elizabeth Kang described efforts at Renown Health to improve APP practice through an APP Advisory Council, surveys, streamlined charting processes, updated scope-of-practice language, and advocacy at the state level. She emphasized that APPs should get involved, seek mentorship, and participate in professional advocacy to protect and expand their role.<br /><br />Carlin Calloway focused on academic medical center practice at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. She highlighted the importance of APP presence in leadership, quality improvement, research, teaching, onboarding, and mentorship. She also discussed retention strategies, wellness and burnout, collaborative relationships with physicians, creative scheduling, billing optimization, and the use of new tools such as AI and structured training programs.<br /><br />Deborah Jemison shared the community-practice perspective from New York Cancer and Blood Specialists. She explained how APPs are essential to patient education, symptom management, treatment planning, survivorship, urgent visits, and continuity of care. She also described their APP Academy, mentorship model, leadership councils, and efforts to use surveys to guide role development and career growth.<br /><br />Overall, the panel agreed that maximizing APP impact requires clear scope, strong onboarding, ongoing education, supportive leadership, modernized credentialing and billing practices, and active collaboration with physicians and the broader care team.
