Video Summary
The webinar, hosted by ACCC, focused on precision medicine resources that support better shared decision making in cancer care. Moderator Jennifer Klempp and a panel from patient advocacy organizations discussed how to make biomarker and genetic testing language more patient-friendly and consistent. Speakers emphasized that many patients do not understand terms like “germline mutation,” “somatic mutation,” or “pathogenic variant,” and that organizations should take more responsibility for clear communication through “organizational health literacy.”

The panel explained that biomarker testing is important across the cancer care continuum, but it is not a “magic bullet” for every patient. They shared research showing that many patients, especially those with lower incomes, do not know whether they were tested or understand their results. The group highlighted the need for plain-language reports, clearer explanations of actionable biomarkers, resistance, therapy options, and clinical trials.

Several organizations presented resources: FORCE’s plain-language study summaries and research reviews; PanCAN’s free Know Your Tumor precision medicine service; Cancer Support Community’s precision medicine materials; Fight Colorectal Cancer’s biomarker brochure and passport; and Longevity Foundation’s No One Missed campaign and patient resources. Overall, the webinar stressed that equitable care depends on accessible testing, clear terminology, and strong patient-provider communication.
