Video Summary
The webinar, hosted by the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Financial Advocacy Network, focused on how to incorporate onboarding and continuous learning into financial advocacy programs. Panelists Lori Schneider, Jennifer Pouquet, Angie Santiago, and Wendy Wah discussed the many roles involved in financial advocacy, including front desk staff, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, billing teams, authorization staff, insurance brokers, state programs, and manufacturers.

They emphasized that financial advocacy is highly dependent on program setting, whether rural, large academic, or multi-site, and that advocates often serve as a connector across the care and revenue cycle teams. A major theme was the value of ACCC’s financial advocacy bootcamp and new playbook as tools for training, onboarding, and ongoing education. Angie described how she built a proactive oncology advocacy program from the ground up, while Jen shared how she used bootcamp resources to launch a program and demonstrate savings to leadership. Wendy highlighted how the playbook helps administrators understand the advocate’s role and identify gaps.

The panel also addressed benefit verification, manufacturer support, clinical trials, undocumented patients, white bagging, and the limitations of estimating treatment costs. Overall, the session stressed that financial advocacy is a continuously evolving, patient-centered function that benefits patients, staff, and the organization.
